This course is an overview of the educational and psychological aspects of exceptional children. Specific topics include human exceptionality, the philosophical, historical, and legal foundations of special education; education and psychology of students with disabilities, characteristics of students with disabilities, and legislation and implementation of policies and procedures.

Course Description:
This course is an introduction to essential knowledge about learning disabilities. Specific topics include introduction to learning disabilities, understanding Specific Learning Disabilities related to language production and reading, understanding Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorders and Autism Spectrum Disorder, understanding other learning disabilities, information literacy and advanced studies of learning disabilities. Each module reviews the potential causes and challenges as well as supports that can be included on IEPs and implemented in the classroom.

Course Description:
Teachers will learn about behavior disorders and practical strategies to support students in school. Key topics include behavior disorders in children and adolescents, classroom supports and interventions, behavior interventions within Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), behavioral analysis and data collection methods, and the impact of adverse childhood experiences.

Course Description:
Teachers will learn about inclusive education and inclusive practices. Specific topics include supporting exceptional youth in inclusive classrooms, differentiated instruction, creating and sustaining classroom communities, least restrictive environment, assistive technology, transition planning, social communication intervention skills, and approaches to support students with exceptionalities integrate academically and socially.

Course Description:
Teachers will learn about curriculum and curriculum development for children with special needs. Specific topics include curriculum planning, curriculum-based assessments, curriculum accommodations and modifications for students with disabilities, learning environments, and materials for students with disabilities

Course Description:
Teachers will learn about best practices to support students with disabilities to develop literacy. Specific topics include strategies for the development of literacy, stages of literacy development, instruction and differentiation of literacy throughout K-12 education, literacy for students with disabilities, and diagnosis and assessment of reading and math difficulties for non-education/literacy/reading majors.

Course Description:
Teachers will learn about different assessments and assessment practices for students with disabilities. Specific topics include the rationale for assessing students with exceptional learning needs, administering and analyzing standardized and functional assessments, psychological and educational assessments, and diagnostic assessments, and how these assessments are involved in evaluation and special education plan development.
