This introductory course is for teachers to learn the content of PSI Chemistry and how to teach that course to students. This is a mathematically rigorous chemistry course that builds upon foundational topics in physics and leads to a better understanding of biology. Topics include atomic structure, chemical reactions, stoichiometry, kinetics, and equilibrium.

About

This course is designed for those who are learning to teach chemistry to high school students. This is an honor's level course focusing on the following topics: atomic structure, the periodic table, chemical bonding, properties of matter and solutions, chemical reactions and stoichiometry, thermochemistry and kinetics. The topics, and their order of presentation in the course, are geared towards reinforcing skills in physics, algebra and geometry. 

Course Format

The first 15 modules of this course all contain a short answer assignment, a quiz, a lab, and a module exam. Make sure that you familiarize yourself with each of the short answer assignment’s grading rubric. Each module also contains practice problems, videos, and interactives to facilitate your learning. In module 16, you’ll be writing a reflection paper about what you’ve learned in the course and completing a comprehensive final exam.

This is the first of two field experience courses in which candidates teach at least one section of PSI Chemistry to students. Learners will develop a deeper understanding of PSI chemistry content and teaching methods. Content topics will be drawn from CHEM6701. Methods topics include dynamic, brief direct instruction; polling-facilitated formative assessment; social constructivism; and mastery-based summative assessment. 

Prerequisites: CHEM6101 and CHEM6701, or Instructor Approval

Co-Requisite: CHEM-6703

(A waiver from the NJDOE allows all candidates enrolled in the Physics Endorsement program to teach this course.)

Topics include atomic structure, compounds, stoichiometry, and solutions.

About

This course is for teachers to review and extend their prior study of chemistry in the realms of basic principles of matter and energy; periodicity; thermodynamics; organic chemistry; and biochemistry. The course is intended to provide teachers a greater depth of concept mastery to support their teaching of PSI Chemistry and enable them to teach PSI Advanced Placement Chemistry.  This capstone course also serves as a review for the Chemistry Praxis Content Knowledge Test (5245).

CHEM-2701 is a free, online study guide for first-year high school chemistry. This course focuses on the following topics: atomic structure, the periodic table, chemical bonding, properties of matter and solutions, chemical reactions and stoichiometry, thermochemistry and kinetics. The topics, and their order of presentation in the course, are geared towards reinforcing skills in physics, algebra and geometry. It is designed to support students who are taking PSI Chemistry in their school, as well as most other first-year chemistry courses. It is also useful for parents, teachers and anyone interested in learning chemistry. It includes all necessary course materials, but does not include assessments, discussion boards or teacher support and, as a result, does not offer a transcript with grade.

This is a pilot Chemistry course for Lesotho.
